Abstract:

Includes original prints, drawings and posters. Subjects and themes of many works allude to freedom of expression, civil liberties, civil rights, McCarthyism, contemporary United States politics, the Levering Oath (i.e. the Californka Loyalty Oath), Nazi Germany, the Paris Commune, labor, and San Francisco street scenes. Other fine art pieces include landscapes, still lifes and portraits, including a few self-portraits. Also includes posters promoting Rowe's book The Enemy Among Us; a John Beecher reading; the First Ammendment; and the opening of the new Laney College. In addition to original works, several photocopies of original works (many not included in the collection) are also present.

Frank Rowe was a first-year art teacher when, along with a small group of colleagues, he was fired by San Francisco State College in 1950 for refusing to sign California's new anti-communist loyalty oath, the Levering Act. Rowe was barred from teaching from 1950 until the California Supreme Court overturned the oath in 1967. His book The Enemy Among Us: A Story of Witch-hunting in the McCarthy Era was published in 1980. Rowe also taught at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. Frank Rowe died in 1985.
